How to Wrestle with Questions About Faith, God, and the Bible

Answers | Sun Valley Community Church | 5 mins

If you've ever wrestled with questions about faith, God, or the Bible, you're not alone. In fact, asking tough questions is a natural and important part of growing spiritually. Some of the greatest figures in Scripture—Abraham, Moses, David, and even Jesus' disciples—had moments of uncertainty, doubt, and searching.

But what do we do with those questions? How can we wrestle with them in a way that strengthens rather than weakens our faith?

1. Recognize That Faith and Questions Coexist

Many people think that having questions means they lack faith. But the truth is, asking hard questions often leads to a deeper faith. Faith isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about trusting God even when we don’t fully understand everything.

Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith; in many ways, it’s part of the journey toward a stronger belief. Think about the father in Mark 9:24, who cried out to Jesus, "I believe; help my unbelief!" Jesus didn’t condemn his doubts—He met him with grace and understanding.

2. Bring Your Questions to God

God isn’t afraid of your doubts. He invites you to seek Him, even when you don’t have everything figured out. Jeremiah 29:13 says, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."

Here are a few ways to engage with your questions before God:

  • Pray honestly—Tell God exactly what’s on your heart.
  • Read Scripture deeply—Look at the stories of others who have wrestled with doubt.
  • Ask for wisdom—James 1:5 reminds us that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, and He will give it generously.

3. Seek Wisdom from Trusted People

God designed us for community, and some of the best answers to our questions come through conversations with wise, faith-filled people.

Consider:

  • Talking with a mentor or pastor who has walked through similar questions.
  • Reading books by Christian thinkers who explore faith and doubt with biblical insight.
  • Listening to messages that engage with tough questions—Sometimes hearing how others wrestle with faith can help bring clarity to our own.

(That’s one reason we created the Asking for a Friend series, where Pastors Chad and Robert answered real, unfiltered faith questions. Check out the full playlist here.)

4. Be Patient with the Process

Faith isn’t about quick answers—it’s about walking with God through the process. Some questions don’t get answered overnight, and that’s okay. Sometimes, the journey of searching is what brings us closer to God, helping us see His faithfulness in new ways.

So if you’re wrestling with questions, don’t run from them. Lean in. Bring them to God. Seek wisdom. Keep walking forward in faith.
